OUR COMMITMENT TO A SUSTAINABLE PATHWAY

All human life depends on our seas and oceans, which are home to the greatest abundance of life on our planet. We are lucky to live and fish in some of the purest and cleanest waters in the world with an improving fish-stock. However, that also means we have a great responsibility to keep it that way and dare we say it, improve things.

Many of us grew up with our first memories of the ocean being rock pools teeming with life and then catching our first fish with mum or dad or maybe granddad. Fair to say things have gone downhill since. We certainly don’t want to contribute to that and want to do our part to keep our oceans and fish-stock healthy and thriving for generations to come.

FISH-STOCKS

Obviously as we are in the business of catching fish, fish-stocks, by-catch and catch limits are highly relevant to us. We have a policy that clients keep no more than one kingfish per person. With snapper, whilst we will not prevent our clients from taking up to their quota, we do ask that they strongly consider how many fish they need, knowing that a single snapper can easily feed a family of four a nice curry for tea etc.

We believe it is important to always work within the legal limits and recommend keeping well less than this as often people, in the excitement of reeling them in, don’t always realise how many fish they are catching (and how much food that equates to) until they are back at the wharf.

In an effort to further protect the fishery, Ultimate Charters has become a gold sponsor of LegaSea - a non-profit organisation dedicated to restoring the abundance, biodiversity and health of New Zealand’s marine environment. In addition to financial support, Ultimate Charters is perfectly positioned to assist LegaSea with its education programs and full support of their initiative, the Kai Ika Project. Ultimate Charters recommends clients fish are filleted by the Kai Ika team onsite at Westhaven (for a small fee of $3 per snapper) following their charter.

PEST-FREE

Whilst preserving our pristine marine environment and marine life is our primary focus, we still do have an interaction with the land – mainly the unique and varied islands of the Hauraki Gulf, many of which are reserves and sanctuaries. That is why we have and hold pest-free certification from DOC to ensure our Crew are trained in ensuring these beautiful islands and eco-systems remain pest free – no stowaways on Ultimate Charters!
